Nicole Heitger-Voice Alex Belhaj-Guitar Dave Kosmyna-Cornet, Piano The Nicole Heitger Quartet presents a blend of Dixieland, swing and bebop, featuring syncopated rhythms and sounds from the 1920’s through the 1940’s. Nicole has been a vocalist for over 30 years and was raised on traditional jazz. Her father, Raymond Heitger, has been the leader of the Cakewalkin' Jass Band for over 50 years. She began singing as a child in her family church, but was particularly inspired by singer Jill Scott before being introduced to the poetry and improvisation of jazz through vocalist and educator Sunny Wilkinson. Tiffany has recorded five CDs of jazz standards, released by SONY RECORDS Japan, that feature such musical greats as Hank Jones, Tadataka Unno, Omar Hakim, and many others. In September of 2023, Tiffany released on all digital platforms, her most personal album to date with friend, producer, trumpeter and arranger Kris Johnson. Five of the album’s eight songs feature lyrics penned by Gridiron and co-composed by Johnson, with Brendon Davis (piano), Jonathan Muir-Cotton (bass), Nate Winn (drums), and Vivienne Smith (background vocals) also adding their beautiful artistry to this material. His father, the late maestro trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, laid a foundation for him as he continues to carry on the legacy of Detroit jazz royalty. Following close to his father’s strides, Kasan takes pride in contributing to Detroit’s rich pedigree of musical mentorship, as he strives to continue passing down the knowledge and exposure of jazz music to generations after him. The graduate of University of Michigan also currently holds a graduate assistantship under bassist Prof. Rodney Whitaker at Michigan State University. Belgrave has shared the stage with many greats such as Nicholas Payton, Barry Harris, Benny Green, Rodney Whitaker, Theo Crocker, Robert Hurst, Karriem Riggins, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and the Jazz @ Lincoln Center Orchestra w/ Wynton Marsalis. Kasan has performed around the globe. He attended a jazz summer clinic that his father ran at the University of California-Berkeley in 2011, where he met flautist Elena Pinderhughes, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, and Walter Smith III. He traveled to Barbados in 2013, along with saxophonist Marcus Elliott and pianist Ian Finkelstein, where they performed a masterclass and concert sponsored by the U.S. Embassy. He’s performed frequently at the Detroit Jazz Festival, as a sideman for Wendell Harrison, Rob Pipho, Rick Margitza, Nicholas Payton, and Detroit bassist Ali Bey. In 2017, he performed a duet with the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin in her last ever live Detroit performance at the Music Hall.

Recently honored as a two-time winner at the 2025 Michigan Music Awards for Best Jazz Album and Best Jazz Single/Performance, she is an emerging talent you won’t want to miss. Olivia has carved her own path, learning from some of the finest jazz musicians in the Midwest, and has cultivated a rich, distinctive sound as a result. Her hard work has yielded two EP’s, first “When the Shadows Fall” in 2021 and “Don’t Be Mad At Me” in August of 2023. Both recordings feature a mix of original material and standards that come from early jazz, swing, blues and bebop styles. These recordings have taken her to tour in surrounding major cities such as Ann Arbor, Toledo, Cleveland, Columbus, Southbend, Chicago, and Pittsburgh. She performs in a wide range of settings, from intimate duo performances to dynamic big band collaborations and everything in between. Recently, she took the stage with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra in December 2024 and is set to return for their Holiday Pops performance in December 2025. Additionally, she received “Best Vocalist” for the Preservation of Jazz Excellence Award in Detroit, many nominations by the Detroit Music Awards and recognition by many Michigan-based publications. Beyond recording, she has also composed, arranged, and produced performances, enriching the vibrant landscape of contemporary jazz music. She has collaborated with renowned musicians, including Detroit pianist Scott Gwinnell, two-time JUNO Award-winning vocalist Caity Gyorgy, and esteemed Ann Arbor bassist Paul Keller. Olivia continues to work with leading jazz artists across Michigan and the broader Midwest, sharing her passion for music and spreading joy through her artistry.

Sam Gucwa is a saxophonist and woodwind doubler known for her bold bandleading and inventive solos across genres. Beginning her professional career after moving to Denver in 2020, Gucwa played as a big band saxophonist with the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra (Colorado) and the Dean Bushnell Orchestra (Colorado) on every reed part. She performed in trombonist Stafford Hunter’s Young Lions residency series, and currently plays baritone saxophone in MSU’s Be-bop Spartans Jazz Orchestra II as well as alto in Walter Blanding’s Nonet IV. Beyond the jazz tradition, Gucwa has performed with the Boulder Philharmonic on baritone saxophone, and recorded as PureArtistMusic’s studio woodwind while living in Denver. She’s been featured as a guest artist for Brian Vander Ark, bandleader of the Verve Pipe and proud Michigan native. She arranged and coordinated live instrumentation for indie rock band Bleak Mystique and helped them win the University of Denver’s Battle of the Bands. In March of 2024, Gucwa presented her research on the impacts and lives of Miles Davis’ romantic partners on the TEDxMSU stage. Her research led her to development of her debut album set to release in winter 2025. Gucwa is a graduate of Michigan State University, having studied under tenor saxophonist Walter Blanding. She plays reed 2 with Rodney Whitaker’s Gathering Orchestra and performs groups like MoonMill, the Alluvion Big Band, and Brian van der Ark of the Verve Pipe.

Born and raised in Ann Arbor, Max is an alumnus of Community High School’s award-winning jazz program. After receiving a BA in Philosophy from Lawrence University, Max lived in Milwaukee where he performed with the WAMI nominated Match Stick, the hip-hop collective Ruby Yacht and his trio. As part of Ruby Yacht, Max opened for Future Islands during their 2017 North American tour. Returning to Ann Arbor in fall 2017, Max completed a Masters of Music at the University of Michigan studying under Miles Okazaki. Since re-settling in Michigan, Max has performed and/or recorded with Detroit luminaries such as Vincent Chandler, Marion Hayden, Leonard King, and Musique Noire. Additionally, Max teaches guitar privately, focusing on music theory and improvisation.

Nate’s talents have since taken him beyond Detroit to cities like Los Angeles and New Orleans, where he played alongside Jazz luminaries such as Charlie Gabriel and Shannon Powell. Inspired by revolutionaries like Lester Young and Eddie Harris, Nate gives precedence to a more individualistic approach to the saxophone. He’s developed a unique sound that captures any room with fresh, soulful, and melodious solos. Nate also attributes his distinctive tone to his vintage saxophones. His lineup includes a 1919 tenor, 1926 alto, 1906 soprano, and 1970 baritone. These instruments help Nate emulate the sounds of artists who have influenced him from a young age while simultaneously allowing him to explore new sonic concepts.

Wyatt began his musical career at the age of three when he learned drums and then progressed to discover jazz and classical piano at the age of 8. Wyatt started to play the Trombone in fourth grade and added the Bass Trombone to his studies a year later. He continued his Jazz education with six years of study at the Jazz St. Louis: JazzU program. Since then, Wyatt has studied with Steve Davis, Randy Napoleon, Walter Blanding, Anthony Stanco, Xavier Davis, Diego Rivera, Rodney Whitaker, Randy “Uncle G” Gillespie, Carl Allen, Dave Dickey, James Burton III, Adam Larson, Tim Green, Brandon Lee, Jim Alfredson, and Gerry Pagano. After studying with Prof. Michael Dease since the age of 12 years old, Wyatt has decided to continue his studies with him and the faculty at Michigan State University. He is currently working to achieve his undergraduate degree in Jazz Trombone Performance. Wyatt has won many “Best Jazz Soloist” awards at many jazz festivals in the Midwest region. In 2016, Wyatt played bass trombone in the 2016 Jazz Band of America under the direction of Michael Mossman, the 2017 Next Generation Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Paul Contos, the 2018 NYO Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Sean Jones, and the 2021 JAS Academy Big Band under the direction of Christian McBride in Aspen, Colorado. Wyatt was also a member of the Ulysses Owens Jr. Big Band and was a part of their debut record, “Soul Conversations.” In addition, Wyatt has had the opportunity to tour the US, Canada, and Europe with various ensembles and perform at festivals, including the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Benny Golson Jazz Festival, the Rochester Jazz Festival, and many others. At the age of 9 Allen decided to join his elementary school's band, John Trix Elementary. From then on he never put the trumpet down, finding a whole new passion for instrumental music. In 5th grade Allen was introduced to jazz, but his understanding and liking toward it was not yet found. Throughout middle school Allen decided to stop playing jazz and took up classical music instead. Little did he know that in the near future he'd come to find himself feeling restricted while playing classical music. Throughout high school, (Detroit School of Arts), he still chose to play classically, but around the 10th grade he decided to dive back into jazz. From then on he chose jazz as his musical style. He began to study players such as Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis, Woody Shaw, Lee Morgan, and Roy Hargrove just to name a few. Around his senior year of high school Allen had the privilege of being mentored by the great Marcus Belgrave, one of Detroit's own legendary trumpeters and educators. Since then, Allen's involvement in jazz increased exponentially.

In a steady residency since 2022, Nick has assembled a large repertoire of high energy, hard-swinging original arrangements and compositions, including seldom played tunes. Combining a wide variety of music with a regular band with consistent personnel creates an engaging performance where anything can happen. Nick and his groups are honored by a regular and growing audience, beginning with their late set performances and more recently sold-out main sets. Christopher Minami, native of Florida, recently completed his Master’s in Jazz Studies at the Michigan State University College of Music in the studio of Randy Napoleon. Minami completed his undergraduate degree in both classical guitar and jazz genre at Florida State University’s College of Music in the studio of Bruce Holzman. While at FSU, Minami participated with the Jazz Honors Band under the direction of Marcus Roberts. Through his young career, Minami has received numerous awards for both classical and jazz guitar, including the prestigious Florida Guitar Festival and Competition.

"Thoughtful and fearless playing..." - All About Jazz "She's got her finger on the pulse of something else, her generation." - Jason Moran ABOUT LAURA-SIMONE Laura-Simone Martin is a 20-year-old bassist who has performed at nationally acclaimed venues like the BBC Proms, Carnegie Hall, Blue Note at Sea, the Kennedy Center, Monterey Jazz Festival, and more. This past summer, she was a part of Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Jazz Orchestra, where she toured Europe with Sean Jones and 2x Grammy winning vocalist, Dee Dee Bridgewater. She has also been in Princeton University's Creative Large Ensemble and Jazz At Lincoln Center's Youth Orchestra. In her junior year of high school, she combined her passions for music and activism by founding the Queen Amina Music Program to help push the “women in jazz” music movement. This program is for 4th-8th grade instrumentalists at the Lawrence Intermediate School and Lawrence Middle School, where she teaches songs, the history of women in jazz, improvisational skills, and how to navigate modal progressions. This past year she received a grant to invite guest artists and hold a day of masterclasses for the Queen Amina students and the Lawrence High School music department, ending with a public concert on March 15, 2023, featuring Oscar winner and Grammy-nominated saxophonist Tia Fuller. Currently she is freshman at Michigan State University studying under renowned bassist, Rodney Whitaker.

The Mercer Patterson Quintet is a contemporary jazz ensemble originating in the Metro-Detroit area. They play a variety of originals, written by all members of the band and are influenced by a wide range of styles and artists, including the music of Herbie Hancock, Frank Zappa, and Steve Lehman. Formed their freshman year at the University of Michigan, they have had the opportunity to study and receive guidance from the likes of Terrell Stafford, Robert Hurst, Brian Lynch, Andy Milne, Ellen Rowe, Caroline Davis, and Chuck Bergeron. They have toured across the country, at notable venues such as the Detroit Jazz Festival, Ravenscroft, Shapeshifter Lab, Mr. Tipples, Aspen-Snowmass Jazz, Berlin MN, and more.

(18% gratuity and online service charge added at checkout under "fees”) Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Kevin Brewster is a saxophonist, composer, and educator whose musical journey is deeply rooted in the vibrant traditions of Gospel music. His repertoire is a fusion of contemporary, straight-ahead, gospel, and R&B that herald a new era/bring a new vision for jazz characterized by authenticity, resilience, and unwavering faith. In 2023, Kevin founded his group, "Black Renaissance," a collective dedicated to propelling the narrative of Black American Music into new uncharted territories. Together, they have become a sought-after feature, performing regularly as headliners at Blue Llama Jazz Club, Cliff Bells, Dabney and Co, GRNoir, and other venues in Michigan. Recently graduating from Michigan State University with a BM in Jazz Studies , Kevin has grown tremendously under the mentorship of educators Walter Blanding Jr. and Rodney Whitaker. Kevin’s musical education has been enriched by encounters with jazz artists such as Bob Nixon, Diego Rivera, and Vincent Herring, each leaving an outstanding mark on his artistic development. Kevin has had the honor of participating in the prestigious programs that include the donor-funded 2024 JAS Academy featuring Artistic Director Christian Mcbride, the Gathering Nonet Jazz ensemble, an outreach program formed by the late great Detroit jazz pianist Geri Allen, and the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra directed by Gerald Clayton. Kevin has played alongside distinguished artists such as Terri Lyne Carrington, Patrice Rushen, Jazzmeia Horn, Christian Sands, and Immanuel Wilkins through these programs. Kevin is beginning his graduate studies at John Hopkins Peabody Conservatory. Selected as one of three recipients of the Graduate Jazz Fellowship, Kevin looks forward to continuing his growth as a musician, leader, and educator under the mentorship of Sean Jones and Tim Green.
